Hey guys, it’s Chia from Brand24 and today I want to talk about online reputation management. Managing your online reputation, especially for a business, is about closing the gap between two separate concepts: how your COMPANY perceives itself VS how the PUBLIC perceives it. If you’re lucky, these 2 concepts won’t be too far off from one another, but that’s not always the case.
Reputation management in the traditional sense (meaning offline) is really closely connected to PR, or public relations. Before Google (which is basically before the Internet), managing your business reputation and shaping the public perception of your company was mostly based on offline activities, so companies were focused on reaching out to journalists, trying to get in touch with reporters, or attending events and other networking opportunities.
And the goal was simple: these businesses wanted to build their reputation and get people talking about them — because this was the best way for potential customers and clients to learn more about a company: through Word-of-Mouth, especially if what they heard came from a friend or relative, based on a personal experience that they had with the brand — like a “peer recommendation”.
The goal is still the same today, but a lot has changed in the reputation management landscape, with the biggest difference being that most of these “peer recommendations” now happen online, across the web, and especially in social media… which is why it’s become so important for companies to keep an eye on their ONLINE reputation.
With the Internet having evolved into what it is today, it’s not surprising to see the same changes reflected in how businesses need to manage their online reputation. And this requires that companies pay special attention to 2 specific areas, including: Social Media and Google Search. Social media — because it’s become the best place for companies to (a) DISCOVER what kind of reputation they have among their audience, and (b) address any issues or negative feedback before they have a chance to escalate and damage their reputation. Online Search Results have gained significance because they show you the first thing that people see when they’re looking for more information about your product or your brand online, especially on Google, which now generates over 90% of all search engine traffic around the world.
Now, when I say social media, at least in this video about online reputation management, I’m also referring to blogs, forums, and review sites since these are all public platforms that let people voice their opinions in very social ways that anybody on the Internet can…

Today's episode is about online reputation management, often shortened to ORM, though I don't know if people call it ORM.
ORM is a variation of search engine optimization (SEO) on steroids requiring the ability to promote all the positive and neutral articles showing up on Google or Bing search—most of which are not owned or controlled by the client or agency—with the goal of bubbling the positive and neutral articles to the top two pages of Google, relegation the negative articles to page 3 or 4 of Google and Bing (Google is 100x more of a challenge than Bing, every time).
ORM Key Value Points
Stop the propagation of misinformation and confusion by pushing it onto results pages where 10 percent or fewer of searchers will ever see it.
Create content to ensure that the negative content already present is outweighed by positive content.
Place greater emphasis on positive achievements and accomplishments.
Create a long-term solution that will help to prevent any future unwelcome issues from surfacing.
Which search engines dominate the market?
Google leads the search engine market, with approximately 66% of U.S. searches. For this reason, our engagements target Google primarily. Microsoft Bing, which also powers Yahoo! Search, accounts for roughly 30% of the market. The other 4% is taken up largely by Ask and AOL. For the vast majority of cases, successful ORM engagements in Google lead to comparable success elsewhere.
What impact does social media have on reputation management?
Social media has a large impact on online reputation. According to recent data, approximately 18% of visitors to a business’s website are influenced by social media. We can help you develop strategies to specifically address this aspect of your online reputation.
How does it relate to perception management, traditional reputation management, crisis management, and strategic public relations?
How does it relate to search engine optimization (SEO?)
The expertise of SEO firms does not address the problems of online reputation management (ORM). Promote welcome items and demote unwelcome items using our proprietary and patented technology and methods.
Focus on creating new content to provide supplementary ranking strength to preexisting welcome materials.
Assess the effectiveness of the engagement and refine the technological framework as required, testing the level of support necessary to create the greatest likelihood of permanent positive change.
Build sufficient preventative strength in the search results to protect against new unwelcome content that might potentially be posted in the future.
How much does ORM cost?
